With modern facilities, equipment and over 350 talented researchers and staff, APL-UW provides a unique, dynamic work environment with many opportunities.APL-UW has an outstanding opportunity open for a Temporary Electrical Engineer in the research areas of oceanography; ocean engineering; marine renewable energy; marine robotics; and, autonomous vehicles.The Electrical Engineer in the APL's Ocean Engineering Department will be responsible for the design, construction and field deployment of specialized electrical systems for oceanographic, marine robotics, marine renewable energy and acoustic instrumentation. Design tasks will be varied and may range from custom circuit boards to extremely complex data acquisition systems. Special emphasis will be placed on the design of electrical systems for long term operation in the ocean. Design decisions are complex and also involve non-technical factors such as budgetary considerations, and project timelines and milestones.Specific work will be completed in the following areas:Design & Build-Circuit board design using PADS software-Development of electrical power budgets-Data acquisition device design-Electrical component specification-Adhering to APL Ocean Engineering documentation standards-Coordination with APL technicians and external vendors for the fabrication, assembly and bench testing of electrical components parts Deploy & Operate-At-sea installation, operation and maintenance of systemsRequirements:Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field and 3+ years of experience- PADS software design experience- Marine hydrokinetic device design experience- Able to meet the physical requirements necessary to work at sea in small to large vessels for extended periods and willing to perform the required duties aboard ships.- Able to work independently, and as part of a research team, interacting cooperatively with people from diverse backgrounds, academic levels, and nationalities.- Able to acquire and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance.Desirable prior experience working with:-MHK, Robotics, UUVs, AUVs, or ocean gliders-Systems for US Naval applications-Synchronous and/or asynchronous acoustic tracking ranges-Oceanographic and/or acoustic systems or instrumentation-Digital signal processing applications.Application Process:The application process for UW positions may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.
