Reporting to the Associate Dean for Pro Bono and Public Interest, the Director will serve as the NJ Innocence Project chief executive and also will carry a caseload of legal matters. As the leader of a new innocence organization, the Director also will develop protocols for case screening, investigation, and client representation; work collaboratively with the Law School's in-house clinical program and other pro bono partners; work with the project Advisory Board; and seek sources of external and University funding. This position may be based on the Camden or Newark campus and will require statewide travel.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Must have an earned Juris Doctor degree and be a member of the bar in good standing of any state
A minimum of three years of experience practicing criminal defense at the trial or appellate level or handling innocence cases
Passion for access to justice and due process for all
Development and fundraising experience
Member of the New Jersey Bar
Experience serving in a leadership role in a mission-driven setting
Experience with budget oversight
Ability to develop strong relationships across a diverse spectrum of stakeholders, and to work well with leaders in the private, government, and not-for-profit sectors
Ability to work well with partners and partner organizations
Excellent public speaking and communication skills
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Must be willing to travel to prisons, scene investigations, meetings, and between the Camden and Newark campuses regularly. Incumbent may work at one and/or both campuses. This position will require statewide travel.
Salary: Starting salary will be commensurate with experience and within departmental budgets.
