Software Engineer (Robot Test)
The National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) at Carnegie Mellon University is seeking applicants for the position of Software Engineer in Robot Testing for existing and new projects. In this position, you will initially work on testing a complex robotic system. Your first system will be swarm of robots for finding objects in difficult field environments. Other systems you may assist with include a floating factory and other higher performance off-road autonomous vehicles.
Our team has members with diverse backgrounds both in robotics and other industries aligned to make robust software and firmware that is useful in the world. Projects we have developed range from industrial machine operator assist systems to agricultural productivity tools and beyond to other automation, autonomy, or safety systems. Your day to day work will include: evaluating new features for testability, integrating testing toolchains for simulator based testing, developing test plans for field testing, developing software tests.

Your primary responsibilities include:
- Design, implement, document, troubleshoot, and automate tests for robot software
For example:- Work with autonomy algorithm developers on unit tests
- Integrate with DevOps tools like Jenkins
- Analyze and choose testing frameworks for new projects
- Develop test plans and procedures for in-field testing for real robots
- Develop integration tests that leverage a simulation platform
- Supervise and support technicians performing field tests
- Contribute to specifications of functional and non-functional requirements
- Participate in the development lifecycle including: design, code reviews, and full robot system testing.
- Travel to remote test sites
Required Qualifications:
- B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or equivalent experience (More is a bonus).
- 1-3+ years combined graduate academic and professional software development/quality experience.
- Demonstrated understanding and use of software engineering concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Experience with scripting languages for testing and automation (Python preferred).
- Linux development experience.
- Solid technical communication skills.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle
- Demonstrated success working as part of a cross-functional team.

- Robot Software Testing
- Computer vision, robotics, machine learning, scientific computing, simulation, embedded, or graphics.
- Hardware in the Loop Testing
- Robot Operating System (ROS)
- ROSTest, ROSLaunch, Jenkins, Docker, Ansible
- Other DevOps technologies.
- C++ skills.
- Hardware Quality Assurance Experience
- Off Highway Vehicle Experience
- Data science or data management.
