About the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative:
The Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI), funded by the Virginia General Assembly, created a Commonwealth-wide ecosystem of innovation in cybersecurity and cyber-physical systems (CPS) security. CCI will ensure Virginia is recognized as a global leader in secure CPS and in the digital economy more broadly for decades to come by supporting world-class research at the intersection of data, autonomy, and security; promoting technology commercialization and entrepreneurship; and preparing future generations of innovators and research leaders. George Mason University serves as the leading strategic planning and operational institution for the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative's Northern Virginia (NoVa) Node.
About the Position:
The incumbent will conduct research at George Mason University and as part of the Northern Virginia Node of the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative, and in partnership with researchers from the Coastal Node of the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative and Old Dominion University. Successful candidates will have access to the faculty and facilities of both George Mason University and Old Dominion University to enable their success.
The goal of the Initiative is to foster research, education and outreach on cybersecurity, particularly on CCI NoVa Node focus areas related to cybersecurity in national defense, transportation, electric/power distribution, connected communities, manufacturing and supply-chain sectors and the impact of human behavior on cyber security systems. The interdisciplinary initiative currently includes faculty from a range of disciplines including computer science, engineering, psychology, business, law, public policy and information technology. Details about the initiative are available at CCI. We are especially interested in faculty able to conduct research in an interdisciplinary environment and who hold a security clearance. The incumbent will be expected to be fully involved in this initiative and work collaboratively with their counterparts at Old Dominion University.
Leverage university-level strategic priorities in cybersecurity research to lead transformative growth and impact the research portfolio, and to further encourage and foster new and existing collaborations with academic, industrial, and governmental institutions in Northern Virginia, Coastal Virginia and the greater Washington, D.C., area;
Work collaboratively with Northern Virginia Node and Coastal Node faculty and their counterparts at Old Dominion University to develop joint proposals and support research initiatives that advance Virginia's reputation as a global leader in cybersecurity; and
Mentor students in cybersecurity.
Doctorate degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Systems Engineering, or a related field;
Have an outstanding cybersecurity research record, as well as a commitment to fostering interdisciplinary research/education; and
US citizen able to obtain a US government security clearance.

About Mason Cybersecurity:
Cybersecurity has been a focus of Mason for many years, originally for information systems and more recently also for cyber-physical systems. Highlights include the first-in-the-nation BS in Cybersecurity Engineering with 591 majors in fall 2021; a new Department of Cybersecurity Engineering and an MS in Cybersecurity Engineering; selection by NSA as a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education, as well as a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Research; a $40 million award to Mason by the Department of Homeland Security to lead the Center of Excellence in Criminal Investigations and Network Analysis; more than 50 faculty engaged in cybersecurity research and education; a facility in which classified research focused on cybersecurity and other critical challenges is performed for the Department of Defense, Intelligence Community, and other US Government agencies; cybersecurity research valued at more than $30M from the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, Department of Transportation, and other federal agencies; and more than 4,000 students engaged in educational programs across the Volgenau School that teach aspects of cybersecurity. Major New Investments in Cybersecurity and Computing:
Concurrent with Amazon's commitment to build a new headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, Mason launched four exciting new initiatives now underway: (1) the Institute for Digital InnovAtion (IDIA), which fosters research especially in computer science, data analytics, cybersecurity, and multidisciplinary computing that leverage the full spectrum of faculty and student talent across Mason; (2) the expansion of Mason Square Campus in Arlington with a planned 350,000 square foot building called Fuse that will support research and graduate education in close partnership with Northern Virginia's vibrant technology community; (3) Mason's new School of Computing – the first such school in Virginia, and (4) Virginia's Commonwealth Cyber Initiative which supports research in 5G/NextG, autonomous systems, advanced manufacturing, and other leading-edge technologies. Cybersecurity is a central facet of all these initiatives, which together reflect hundreds of millions of dollars in new investment that will rapidly elevate Mason's already leading national position in cybersecurity.
A Force for Innovation in the Heart of Northern Virginia's Technology Corridor
The College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) at George Mason University is comprised of the Volgenau School of Engineering and a new School of Computing. The College is a fast-growing force for innovation in research and education. Ranked nationally in the top 100 in both undergraduate and graduate education, the College boasts more than 9,100 students in 37 undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degree programs, including several first-in-the-nation offerings. Of the 271 full-time faculty who comprise the College, 91 are tenured, 59 are tenure-track, 89 are instructional faculty, and 32 are research faculty.
