DEPARTMENT: Recreation and Facilities FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Full-time Exempt
POSITION FOCUS:
Works under the direction of the Golf Course Superintendent. Responsible for assisting with the administration of the maintenance, repair, development and construction of the grounds at Arlington Lakes Golf Course, Nickol Knoll Golf Course, and Sunset Meadows Driving Range, Sunset Meadows natural turf, including both basins.
SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to the Golf Course Superintendent
Assists with the supervision of non-exempt full-time, part-time and seasonal golf maintenance staff
Serves as the acting Superintendent in the absence of the Golf Course Superintendent
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
Assists with supervision of the mowing, watering and maintenance of tees, green, fairways, and related areas
Assists with the supervision of the planting, fertilizing and maintenance of turf at District golf properties.
Inspects turf areas daily for fungus, insects and undesirable vegetation
Assists with the supervision of the maintenance and repair of construction maintenance equipment, golf cart fleet, and parks equipment.
Keeps inventory records on all equipment and commodities used in maintenance operations
Assists with the planning of in-house and contracted capital maintenance projects
Collaborates on the irrigation management of the District golf properties
Consults with the Golf Course Superintendent daily to prevent maintenance interference with play
Maintains work/time records of golf maintenance employees, prepares biweekly payroll and submits it to the Finance Department in a timely basis
Adheres to budget requirements for golf club maintenance operations
Assists with the hiring, training, and supervision of part-time seasonal staff
Conducts staff meetings with direct reports
Attends work on a regular basis
Performs the job safely and in compliance with District policies, procedures, work and safety rules, and the employee handbook
Maintains a clean and organized work environment

SECONDARY JOB DUTIES
Assists with preparing specifications for fertilizers, chemicals, materials, trees, equipment and vehicles
Selects trees and shrubs for trimming, pruning and propagation
Sprays and grooms trees with fungicide
Changes cups and tee markers
Assists with mowing of golf course areas and aeration of greens, tees and fairways
Troubleshoots the repairs of the Thorguard lightning detection units
Submits reports to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Illinois State Water Survey
Assists with plowing snow at the golf, driving range and park properties
Troubleshoots and repairs irrigation pumps, wells, piping and control panels
Assists in the development and implementation of the department’s Comprehensive Plan and capital budget
Assists provides orientation and training to staff
Maintains required departmental records
Attends meetings and participates in MAGCS, GCSAA, and other golf maintenance and other local community agencies, associations and organizations as deemed necessary related to areas of responsibility
Attends approved professional conferences and workshops to promote knowledge in related areas of responsibility and for continuing education
HOURS
Sunday through Saturday, 40 hours a week, a combination of daytime, evening, and weekend hours required on a weekly basis with work hours designated by the Director of Recreation and Facilities
Hours during peak season will vary based on operational needs of the golf program
Employee shall be on call as required
Employee is considered to be on duty whenever the need exists
Heavy work, lifting up to 75 frequently with assistance, 50 pounds frequently without assistance and up to 20 pounds without assistance constantly
General work area is outdoors, with frequent exposure to natural and potentially extreme weather conditions while performing job duties
Exposure to chemicals such as fertilizers, pesticides, cleaning solutions, solvents, petroleum products, etc.
Exposure to mud, dirt, dust and decaying organic material
Exposure to chronic infectious disease while performing routine first aid or emergency procedures
Protective clothing and equipment is required as it pertains to the particular job duty:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
Strong knowledge of the construction and maintenance of golf course tees, fairways and greens
Strong knowledge of the production and maintenance of turfs used on golf courses
Strong knowledge of planting, cultivation, pruning and caring for plants, shrubs and trees
Strong knowledge of the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners
Good knowledge of drainage control methods and watering and irrigation systems including wells, pumps, and automatic controls
Good knowledge of the construction and maintenance of golf cart paths
Good knowledge of the game of golf
Good knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software programs
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
Ability to maintain tees, fairways greens and appurtenances to an acceptable standard of golf course play
Good knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives of park and recreation administration
Good knowledge of the principles of financial management
Ability to cooperate with and interpret Park District philosophies in relation to governmental, public and private groups and agencies and to the general public
Strong knowledge of pertinent safety precautions
Ability to hire, supervise, train and evaluate the work of professional, skilled and semi-skilled employees
Ability to maintain positive and effective working relationships with other supervisors and subordinate employees

Golf at the Arlington Heights Park District provides 27 holes of play at two courses and a driving Range. Arlington Lakes Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-68 course that has been a local favorite for over 40 years. Superbly manicu...red greens, tees, & fairways combine with an excellent design to provide a quality course for players of all levels. Nickol Knoll Golf Club is built on 56 hilly acres and is one of the most unique par 3 courses in the state. Three holes feature vertical-drop tee shots and two holes boast up-hill shots to the green. The 9-hole, par-3 course features 27 sand bunkers, and water comes into play on two of the nine holes. Sunset Meadows Driving Range and Golf Learning Center has twenty-five hitting stations that are lighted for extended evening use with four target greens for additional course-like atmosphere. There is also a practice green available.
