The Undersea Warfare Academic Group of the Naval Postgraduate School invites applications for a non-tenure track faculty position as the Chair for Undersea Warfare (USW). A PhD is not required, however an advanced degree in an engineering discipline is preferred. Applicants must demonstrate knowledge of all aspects of the USW mission. The NPS Undersea collaborative thesis and thesis equivalent research projects are conducted with engagement from a broad spectrum of Navy agencies, national and naval laboratories, and industry. The successful applicant will be expected to facilitate external communication between the school Director, Undersea Warfare Division (OPNAV N97), Naval USW activities, and industry, as well as internal communication between the multiple scholastic disciplines who have a part in the USW problem. Opportunities to engage in graduate teaching may also be available with the requisite background and expertise.
The Undersea Warfare mission relies on technical expertise from many disciplines, including but not limited to: sensors, robotics and unmanned systems control, guidance and navigation, command and control, battle management, and defense analysis. The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) has world-renowned experts in each of these fields, serving as instructors and researchers within their area of expertise. The objective of the USW Chair is to link these instructors and researchers together to promote and guide a focused, interdisciplinary instructional and research program in USW at NPS. The Chair will be the primary focal point for relevant research and solutions to the Sponsor N97, and other USW related commands while also assisting in linking USW education and research at NPS to Naval current, and anticipated future, requirements.
