Job Description: Instructional Design and Faculty Academic Coordinator – Naval Postgraduate School Extended Campus.
The Naval Postgraduate School invites applications for a full-time faculty position as the Instructional Design and Faculty Coordinator for the Naval Postgraduate School Extended Campus (NEC). This position is non-tenure track.
The NPS Extended Campus has provided centralized support for distance learning (DL) as well as institutional strategic initiatives. The NPS Extended Campus provides support in the areas of course design, video support, media, and web support for DL education, strategic planning, and expansion efforts.
Position Overview: We are seeking a dynamic and experienced learning coordinator to join our innovative team. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and contractors across NPS, the Navy, and the Department of Defense (DOD) to design, develop, implement, and evaluate distance learning (DL) instructional programs for the Naval Postgraduate School’s Extended Campus. This role requires strong leadership and management skills, a passion for education, and commitment to an engaging and inclusive learning environment.
The position is responsible for leading coordination efforts and communication of faculty needs with the NEC contracting team. The NEC contract team is an interdisciplinary group comprised of visual designers, videographers, and programmers developing multimedia solutions for course implementation. The position supports academic departments operating distance learning programs and ensures effective delivery of distance education to meet the needs of learners and faculty.
The contributions will directly impact the growth and sustainability of the mission of the NPS Extended Campus, addressing emerging challenges and opportunities. This role reports directly to the Director of the NPS Extended Campus.
Key Responsibilities:
Support NPS faculty in developing instructional materials for distance learning courses using best practices and instructional design principles.
Develop and implement instructional strategies aligned with distance learning requirements.
Work in partnership with faculty, contractors, and subject matter experts to emphasize learning objectives through remote learning.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define learning objectives, methodologies, and delivery timelines. Ensure progress toward desired outcomes.
Maintain familiarity with NPS academic policies, procedures, and resources available to faculty and students in distance learning programs.
Collaborate with the Information and Technology department for proper upkeep of all NEC outreach programs.
Oversee and assign appropriate tasks in accordance with the NEC contractor’s Statement of Work.
Assist with technical monitoring and contract oversight, collaborating with subject matter experts, ensuring accurate and relevant content is presented in an engaging and effective manner through DL delivery.
Program Evaluation - design and implement assessment frameworks to measure the effectiveness and impact of remote learning programs. Continuously gather feedback on faculty needs for courses on functionality and adjust programs as necessary to ensure they meet organization objectives.
Engage with stakeholders such as defense industry partners, educational institutions, and government agencies to create partnerships and leverage resources for DL initiatives.
Lead the faculty orientation portion of the NPS Extended Campus, prepare briefs, informational faculty sessions and create promotional materials.
Required Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Instructional Design, Education or Management preferred. Bachelor’s Degree with 4+ years of experience may be considered.
Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and subject matter experts.
Proven track record of leading and management experience, understanding stakeholder dynamics, creating and socializing departmental needs.
Familiarity with adult learning development and evaluation, curriculum design, and instructional strategies – ensuring alignment to strategy and learning objectives.
Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, in order to effectively interact with faculty and government contractors.
Experience in collaborating with industry partners, academic institutions, and government agencies.
Proven skills in instruction or training.
Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams).
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with graduate level and/or baccalaureate level educators.
Experience in Adult Learning Theory, Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Multimedia Design, Graphic Design or related field with an eye for the end-user experience.
Experience working with Learning Management Systems.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate findings into actionable recommendations.
Knowledge or familiarity with NPS and DoD.
