Description The Department of Literature, Language, and Culture at Simpson College invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of English in British literature before 1900. Simpson is a private, nationally recognized regional college grounded in the liberal arts tradition and located in the vibrant Des Moines metropolitan area. This position is a replacement for an administrative reassignment and may be extended. Teaching responsibilities will begin in August 2026.
Responsibilities include 24 credit hours of teaching-typically 6 courses across fall and spring terms, and a compressed term in May-as well as mentoring students in office hours and participation in program and college activities. Most classes are taught in person on our residential campus, but experience with online teaching or experiential learning is desirable.
Qualifications
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. with a focus on British literature (ABD with a scheduled defense by June 2026 is acceptable).
Successful applicants will have experience teaching survey and/or topics courses (including Shakespeare) in British literature, and a willingness to teach general education courses for majors and non-majors.
Experience with writing-intensive courses and/or first-year courses is preferred.
Expertise and/or teaching experience in any of the following fields would also complement departmental offerings: creative writing, professional and technical writing, ecocriticism, sexuality and gender studies, disability studies, digital humanities, transnational or global anglophone literatures, and film studies
